Understanding PTSD

What post-traumatic stress disorder is.

PTSD can develop after living through or witnessing a traumatic event, combat, an accident, assault, disaster, or loss. The brain's threat system stays switched on long after the danger has passed, which is why memories can feel as vivid as the moment they happened and why the body stays braced for something that's already over.

This is a normal response to an abnormal experience, not a character flaw, and it responds well to the right care. Trauma-focused therapies like EMDR help the brain reprocess the memory so it loses its grip, medication can quiet the hyperarousal, and for trauma that hasn't responded to first-line care, advanced options can help. Dr. Hendleman has particular experience treating trauma in uniformed service members.

Frequently Asked

Questions people ask.

What is PTSD?

Post-traumatic stress disorder is a condition that can develop after a traumatic experience, in which the brain's threat response stays activated long after the danger has passed. It's a normal response to trauma, not a weakness, and it's treatable.

What is the best treatment for PTSD?

Trauma-focused therapies, especially EMDR, have the strongest evidence for PTSD. Medication can ease hyperarousal and sleep problems, and for trauma that hasn't responded to first-line care, advanced options such as IV ketamine or TMS may help.

Do I have to talk through the trauma in detail?

Not necessarily. EMDR, for example, doesn't require describing every detail. Your clinician works at a pace that feels safe and keeps you in control throughout.

Can PTSD be cured?

Many people recover fully or see their symptoms drop dramatically with treatment. Others learn to manage symptoms so they no longer run their lives. Either way, meaningful improvement is very achievable.

Do you treat veterans and first responders?

Yes. Dr. Hendleman has particular experience with trauma in uniformed service members, and we welcome veterans, first responders, and their families.
