About Dr. Hendleman

A physician who takes the whole person into account.

Dr. John Hendleman, DO, is the founder and medical director of Better Balance Psychiatry. As an osteopathic physician, he was trained to look beyond a single symptom and consider how a person's biology, history, and daily life fit together, an approach that shapes how he practices psychiatry today.

He opened Better Balance Psychiatry in 2022 with a clear goal: to bring the kind of thorough, evidence-based psychiatric care usually found in large cities to the communities of St. George and Cedar City. That means unhurried evaluations, honest conversations about what has and hasn't worked, and access to advanced treatments when standard medications fall short.

Dr. Hendleman completed his psychiatry residency training in West Virginia and holds a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree. His clinical interests center on depression that has resisted earlier treatment, anxiety, and trauma, and he leads a team that offers therapy, medication management, and advanced options such as TMS, Spravato, and IV ketamine, all coordinated under one roof.

Patients and families in the region recognized that commitment when they voted him Best Psychiatrist in Southern Utah in 2023.

Service & Experience

Care shaped by a life of service.

Before medicine, Dr. Hendleman served for nearly a decade in the U.S. Army, including with the 19th Special Forces Group (Airborne) of the Utah Army National Guard. His training took him through airborne, air assault, and specialized reconnaissance schools.

That background is more than a line on a resume. It gives him a firsthand understanding of the pressures carried by service members, veterans, and first responders, and of how trauma can follow people home. He brought that perspective to the medical education film For Heroes Proved, contributing a veteran's viewpoint on PTSD and suicide prevention.

Today, that experience informs the compassionate, no-judgment approach he brings to every patient, whether they have worn a uniform or not.
